{HOW I Managed the Spam Comments so far...}

  • A couple of weeks ago, I started to receive numerous anonymous spam comments and some did even end up being published.
  • It also has affected the listing of my Popular Posts, on the sidebar but that will get sorted out again over time.
  • Even if they do end up in the Spam, it is rather annoying for having to delete them. So what did I do to stop this?
Bloggingpro.com
  • Just LOVED this sign from Bloggingpro.com and had to use it here!
Instead of having Anyone comment, I now changed to Registered User  and the Spam Comments have completely vanished!
  • Previously I'd left this open to Anyone as there are lots of silent followers, especially relatives, that never ever comment anyway, so what's the purpose of keeping that option open?
  • Maybe some of you find this helpful as well.
  • So glad it worked for friend Tammy! Read her comment on {Mom's 5th Dialysis Anniversary}
  • If some of you have other tips to share; more than welcome to leave a comment!

Wishing you a great week; wherever you are!

  1. that's the setting i've used all along and get very little - if any - spam. a google account is easy enough for anyone to set up in order to comment - no need to have anonymous comments enabled.

    1. That's true Theresa, and guess I will leave my settings like this for the future.

  2. I use that setting now too. I was getting way too much spam. The final straw for me was when I woke up to 60 spam comments, all exactly the same, on one post. I was furious! I gave up the anonymous commenting option months ago and I couldn't be happier! If someone really wants to comment, they will find a way. You can easily make up a fake name if you want.
    Thanks for getting the word out!

    1. Dear Adrienne,
      Yes, it is annoying and it will make a certain post popular against all odds. Hope we are being relieved now from this spamming as time is precious to each one of us!
      Hugs to you,

  14. Dearest Mariette,
    I have been wondering if I should. I got many of them recently for the same really older posts and I refused comments for the posts. Well, I'll switch it for that; easier solution(^^;)

    PS> Thank you very much for the explanation about the name, I got it finally♬♬♬

    Sending you lots of love and hugs from Japan, xoxo Miyako*

  15. I have another problem, it's also spam not in comments but in readers, and often these are hardporno ones, which I hate to have on my blog. I don't know who to defend, have nothing found to handle with, so I did it like you and maybe it helps

  16. I've never allowed anonymous comments on my blog. Not only to avoid spam but, I've seen on other blogs, people use the anon setting to leave cruel, hurtful or unnecessary comments!

  18. Dear Mariette,

    Thank you for sharing this post, lately I have been getting very tired of spam too, and often seems to be coming from the same name, sigh!
    I never publish them and wonder why they bother? surely they have something better to do. Will have to change my settings.

    Happy weekend
    hugs
    Carolyn

  19. Good for you that you found this sign. It must have been very annoying to get Spam. Your blog postings are very classy and beautiful. Why would any one want to do that to you.
    Hope that all is well.

  20. Liebe Mariette,

  21. I checked my setting and somehow I had "registered user" setting already :-) it's very annoying to get spam comments. Your tip definitely help users who has "anonymous" setting and get spam.

  22. Thanks for this tip! I went in and made the change. There was a couple of weeks where the spam was so bad and one very long comment did get posted on my blog which I was not happy about. I just really don't get what the purpose of all that spam is and why anyone takes the time to pretend to leave a "real" comment in the hopes that their spam will get posted. Just crazy! Best wishes to you, Tammy
