Sydney Centre Point Tower, Captain Cook Luncheon Cruise & Opera House

On Saturday, July 2, 1988 we arrived from Melbourne by plane in Sydney at 10:00 AM. Our Australian friends Rob & Norah Tolson with daughter-in-law Buffie, picked us up and first we visited Sydney Tower Eye
Incredible view from 268 m (879 ft) height and at 360º and the antenna spire sits at 309 m or 1,014 ft.
Do you see the Opera House above the 2 tall buildings on the left?
Turning a little bit to the right and you see Darling Harbour here.
Mushroom friend Rob Tolson explaining...
Here you see the word Qantas on tallest building in this picture...
A bit to the right and you see the Sydney Harbour Bridge
We continue with a Captain Cook Luncheon Cruise
Here we are approaching Sydney Harbour Bridge while on the Captain Cook Luncheon Cruise...
Keep in mind, it was a cloudy winter day!
Here we are in a photo taken from Darling Harbour with the Opera House vaguely visible in the back.
Husband Pieter, me, Buffie and Norah Tolson.
Yes, it was winter time and I loved wearing my Burberry trenchcoat for that matter!
Climbing up the steps to the Opera House. Me, Buffie and Pieter...
Next we did enter the Sydney Opera House
From left to right: Me, Pieter, Buffie and Rob Tolson
More up close with Buffie stepping in, husband Pieter, Norah and Rob Tolson.
Pieter wearing his The Bridge bag, gift from Italy in November 1986.
We traveled with the Tolson family to their home on the rocks at the Hawkesbury river...
Stay tuned for more!

Thanks for your visit and comment.

    1. Dearest Claudia,
As for great pictures, they sure are NOT due to the weather and considering the equipment at the time for photography. But it is enough to evoke a fond memory!
      Hugs to you,
      Mariette

  2. Hello Mariette, The advantage of travel--to see up close such buildings as the famous Sydney Opera House. Also, they seem to like round buildings in Sydney. My favorite detail, though, was that decorative railing on the harbor--I'm not sure whether it is old (the pavement beneath looks new) yet it is decorative and memorable!

    1. Dearest Jim,
Indeed, back in 1988 it sure looked as if round buildings were a preference in Sydney. As for the famous Opera House, by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, looks somewhat similar than the Lotus Temple in Delhi. But the Lotus Temple's architect was Iranian born Fariborz Sahba.
We have been inside both of them and it is quite impressive, even more so from a distance.
Guess the decorative railing is new as well. In Australia they have lost so much of its original history but taking it away before realizing what it meant.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

    1. Beste Joan,
Ja, het is eigenlijk het beste om het vanaf een grotere afstand te zien, zoals in de 1ste foto, van bovenaf. Het is zó ontzettend groot dat je alle besef voor omvang verliest.
      Liefs,
      Mariette

  7. That's a great view from the tower and what a fun to go on the luncheon cruise! I remember riding ferry when I visited Sydney and saw Opera House. I didn't actually go in there. Love the photo of Opera House with steps!

    Happy Thursday, Mariette! xo

    1. Dearest Tamago,
Oh, from the tower viewing the city and the harbour area is incredible and can you imagine on a sunny day?!
The luncheon cruise was lovely, even if it was winter time. Glad you too got to ride the ferry one day!
We were inside the Opera House but it is so vast, it takes you a while for taking all its size in.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  8. I have never been to Australia, but the view from the tower reminded me of the CN Tower in Toronto! I guess the famous Opera House's interior is also amazing.
Thank you for the tour, dear Mariette!

    1. Dearest Marie-Anne,
Well it is very modern and you have to be a fan of that style. Just search for: Sydney Opera House interior and you wil find out.
The CN Tower in Toronto is indeed a very similar construction. Would love to know the diameter of the observation deck for both!
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  10. Lovely memories Mariette. A lot has changed in that landscape in the last 30 years. The Opera House, Sydney Tower and the Harbour Bridge are still the iconic Sydney must-sees.
